The complex features a prominent, curved roofline inspired by traditional Minangkabau architecture. Yet it is what lies on top of the long flat sections of the roof that has drawn particular interest: a fully established green roof system built with modular planter trays, introducing greenery into the civic heart of the township.

Bandar Putra Civic Centre stands out for its blend of contemporary public architecture and references to Negeri Sembilan’s cultural traditions. Deep red façade panels—resembling terracotta textures—are paired with metallic shading fins, creating a modern but warm exterior.
Daylight filters into the public areas through wide clerestory windows, while the roof structure itself has been engineered to accommodate both solar panels and landscape zones. For the landscape architects, the rooftop was an opportunity to bring greenery into a district still dominated by new concrete structures and wide roads.

To construct the rooftop garden, the project team selected modular planting systems produced by HOENSOEY and LEIYUAN of China—manufacturers widely used in Malaysia for their lightweight, durable, and easy-to-install green roof modules.
The shallow units, such as the popular HT-508 green roof trays, were used to create broad areas of lawn-like greenery. Custom curved edging pieces were fabricated to align with the civic building’s signature roofline.
The entire landscape connects to an efficient modular rooftop planting system designed to handle Seremban’s heavy downpours.

Because the Civic Centre receives visitors throughout the week—families, students, community groups—the rooftop planting design favors hardy, low-maintenance species that remain presentable year-round.
These species thrive within the modular system’s controlled soil depth and integrated water-retention chambers, keeping maintenance requirements manageable for municipal staff.

One of the central goals of the rooftop garden was thermal performance. Civic buildings in Malaysia often face high cooling demands due to their large interior volumes. By shading the roof deck and reducing heat absorption, the green roof helps lower indoor temperatures—an improvement that benefits both daily visitors and long-term operational budgets.
From street level, the greenery softens the massing of the complex. From surrounding residential blocks, the rooftop appears as a textured green layer rather than a flat expanse of concrete and mechanical fixtures. The change is subtle but impactful, contributing to a more human-scale neighborhood identity.
